PNBC Legislative Day

June 25, 2015

Dear Brother/Sister in Christ:

This August, 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965. The Voting Rights Act was one of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's crowning achievements and led to sweeping transformational changes in our society including the election of African American officials, changes in the distribution of vital economic, educational, housing, and healthcare resources, and ultimately the election of an African American President.

Unfortunately, in June of 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in a ruling entitled Shelby County v. Holder and added insult to injury by doing so at a time when we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this landmark Civil Rights legislation.

The Supreme Court's decision turned the clock backward on our efforts to make our nation one of justice and liberty for all, however, it was also a wake-up call for Progressive Baptists and other lovers of social justice to rise-up to action.

In light of this, I am calling on you to join me in Washington, DC on Thursday June 25, 2015, for the Progressive Legislative Day to urge lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate to take immediate action to ensure that we will have a strong and reconstituted Voting Rights Act that protects against racial discrimination in voting. This will be the two-year anniversary of the Shelby decision. Rep. Jon Lewis (D-GA) has been invited to join us on this day, as well as other key lawmakers. The day will include an advocacy training, briefings, a press conference and most importantly opportunities for you to take the message of voter rights restoration directly to lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

In addition, we invite you to attend a special worship service and orientation on the evening of June, 24. Hotel arrangements can be made at the Capitol Skyline Hotel 10 "I" Street SW, Washington, DC, 20024 T: 202.488.7500. Please contact Rev. Kip Banks of the PNBC at if you have any questions.

In Christ,

Dr. James C. Perkins,

In 2012, the NAACP National Health Department presented its Black Church & HIV: The Social Justice Imperative Initiative at the Annual Session of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC) in Detroit, MI. The Black Church & HIV: The Social Justice Imperative is a three-pronged initiative that seeks to integrate HIV as a social justice issue by training faith leaders, building relationships with religious denominations and engaging seminarians. This launch prompted PNBC to present a resolution to integrate HIV as a social justice issue within its institutional structure. In January 2014, this resolution was ratified as a formal part of the PNBC Denomination highlighting the partnership between the PNBC and the NAACP National Office. This partnership includes the participation in the NAACP’s Annual “Day of Unity” which is an opportunity for faith leaders to address HIV/AIDS in their church through a sermon, HIV testing, church announcements or raise awareness about the burden of HIV in the African-American community. In 2015, the NAACP HIV Program Manager, Rev. Keron R. Sadler, will be conducting a training at the PNBC Annual Convention in Dallas, TX. This is an opportunity for you to receive a wealth of information that will not only save souls, but save lives. The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. is committed to this HIV social justice movement towards an AIDS-free generation. For more information, please log on to or contact Rev. Keron R. Sadler at
