UNNATURAL CAUSES !
Dear Reverend Smith: Please see the announcement below about he upcoming series on health disparities and inequality. The second episode in the series, talks explicitly about the ill-effects of racism on the birth outcomes of African American babies. As I shared during the midwinter board meeting, African American women are twice as likely to give birth to premature and low birth weight babies placing those babies at greater risk of death and impairment. While the causes for adverse birth outcomes among African American women are complex, there is mounting evidence that the stressors of race and gender are significant contributors for black babies being born too soon and too little. In this episode, I was interviewed and shown conducting a focus group on my research on the stress of race and gender confronted by African American women. Thank you for distributing this to members of the convention. God Bless, Fleda Mask Jackson, Ph.D. From: California Newsreel
