Organizational Structure

The Convention is well organized to function smoothly and effectively. There are eight departments: Women, Laymen, Health Care Ministries, Young Adult Women, Missions, Young Adult Men, Ushers, Youth, Moderators' Council and Congress of Christian Education. These departments are empowered to establish units, commissions and committees to harmoniously and enthusiastically promote the objectives of the Convention. Progressive National Baptist Women strongly advocate and support International Missions Ministries, Christian Education and Civil Rights among their many programmatic commitments. Progressive National Baptist Laymen are champions in evangelistic outreach as well as in the reconstruction and furnishing of the Convention's National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Young Adult Women and the Young Adult Men also provide training and community service opportunities to advance the work of the Convention.

The Ushers and Health Care Unit are training and organizing service personnel and units across the nation. The Progressive Youth Department provides a vital context in which young people will be challenged, involved and inspired to preserve the Progressive heritage and to advance the work and witness of the Convention. The Moderators' Department exists to coordinate and consolidate the worthy endeavors of all Progressive constitutive bodies and affiliates. The Congress of Christian Education exists to promote the education mission of Progressive churches by strengthening the church school, training church leaders and equipping the laity for a lifetime of fruitful services to humanity. Progressives believe that there can be no liberation without education. The truth will make us free!

To enliven and encourage local participation and to increase growth, the Progressive National Baptist Convention has established four regions which meet annually.

Southern Region meets the week following the third Sunday in June. Southwestern Region meets the week following the fourth Sunday in June. Midwestern Region meets the week following Easter Sunday. Eastern Region meets the week following the third Sunday in March.

The Southern, Southwestern and Midwestern Regions incorporate a meeting of their respective regional Congresses of Christian Education in conjunction with their annual sessions. The Eastern Regional Congress of Christian education meets separately the week following the fourth Sunday in June. The Regional Organizational Structure of PNBC provides innumerable opportunities for participation, representation, discovery of new talent and the development of new leadership.

The Seminarian Development Program (SDP) is focused on the support and development seminarians, as developing leaders, through collaborative relationships with PNBC churches and PNBC supported institutions (seminaries, Black colleges and universities, businesses, and agencies), in a global arena environment. An annual seminarian development track is offered as part of the PNBC Annual Session.

There is no other Black Baptist Convention on earth that is so well organized and refined into regional expressions and extensions of its structure and spirit.
